For years, rumors have circulated that Mercedes-Benz is working on a smaller, more affordable version of its iconic off-roader, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Now, new realistic renderings give us the clearest idea yet of what this so-called “Mini G” could look like when it finally reaches production.

Although the name “Mini G” or “Baby G” is unofficial, the vehicle itself is very real. Spy photographers have already captured several camouflaged prototypes testing in Europe, including cold-weather trials in snowy northern regions. A True G-Class, Just Smaller

From what we can see in the latest renderings, the upcoming compact G-Class stays very loyal to the design language of the original.

The SUV features:

• A traditional G-Class-style grille
• Flared wheel arches
• Flat roofline
• Familiar hood design

In short, it looks like a scaled-down version of the legendary G-Wagen rather than a completely new design.

This is important because in the past, some believed the Mercedes-Benz GLB might become the “Baby G.” However, despite some visual similarities, the GLB never truly captured the rugged, military-inspired character of the G-Class. This new model clearly does.

Electric Power Expected First

One interesting detail seen in the renderings is a rear-mounted holder that appears designed for charging cables. This suggests that the Mini G will likely launch as a fully electric vehicle.

Mercedes has already introduced an electric version of the full-size G-Class, known as the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. It would make sense for the smaller G to use similar electric technology, possibly sharing components with other EVs in the Mercedes lineup.

At this stage, nothing is officially confirmed regarding engine options. However, industry rumors suggest that an internal combustion engine (ICE) version could also be offered in certain markets. Mercedes may adjust powertrain choices depending on regional demand, especially in areas where EV infrastructure is still developing.

Unlike many compact SUVs that focus mainly on city driving, the Mini G is expected to retain real off-road capability. Reports suggest it will use a ladder-frame chassis — the same tough body-on-frame structure that gives the G-Class its legendary durability.

Its biggest competitor could be a rumored smaller version of the Land Rover Defender, often unofficially referred to as the “Baby Defender.” Both vehicles are expected to target buyers who want premium styling combined with authentic off-road ability.

A Smart Move for Mercedes

A smaller G-Class could be a major success for Mercedes-Benz. The full-size G-Class is highly desirable but expensive. A compact version would allow more buyers to access the iconic design and brand heritage at a lower price point.
