BMW’s famous M division has shared new and exciting details about its future electric performance cars, and the spotlight is clearly on the upcoming electric M3, which is expected to be called the BMW iM3.

The company recently showed a pre-production test car online, likely testing in very cold Arctic conditions. While the car itself is still covered in camouflage, BMW M revealed some major technical details that give us a clear idea of what’s coming.

Four Electric Motors, One Serious Performance Machine

One of the biggest surprises is that the electric M3 will use four electric motors, one for each wheel. This setup allows each wheel to be controlled separately, giving the car extremely precise handling and grip.

The motors are grouped into two units, one at the front and one at the rear, but power delivery to each wheel remains independent. BMW says this setup will allow better traction, sharper cornering, and more control during hard driving.

BMW also confirmed that these motors include built-in inverters and are powered by a large 800-volt battery system. The battery is said to have more than 100 kWh of usable capacity, which is very big for a performance sedan and should help with both power and range.

Power Numbers Still Secret, But Expectations Are High

BMW has not officially shared horsepower figures yet, but rumors suggest the electric M3 could make over 700 horsepower. Some sources even say it could exceed 738 horsepower, which is the same output as BMW’s powerful XM plug-in hybrid SUV.

To manage all that power, BMW M is developing a new performance-focused control system. This system will allow the motors to recover energy during braking right up to the limit of tire grip. There will also be a special driving mode designed for drivers who enjoy sliding the rear end, yes, even though it’s all-wheel drive.

When Is the Electric M3 Coming?

While BMW has not confirmed the final name or release date, many believe the car will officially debut in 2027 and go on sale as a 2028 model year vehicle, especially in markets like the United States.

BMW insiders strongly believe the electric M3 will indeed be called the iM3, but the company is keeping final details under wraps for now.

Gasoline M3 Is Not Going Away

If electric performance isn’t your thing, BMW has good news. The next-generation gasoline-powered M3 is still coming.

This version is expected to use a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine with some level of electrification. Power output is still unknown, but estimates range from over 600 horsepower to nearly 700 horsepower.

Even more interesting, this gas-powered M3 is expected to be over 1,000 pounds (465 kg) lighter than the electric iM3. That weight difference could make a huge impact on driving feel and performance.
